It was one of the more gorgeous weekends in NYC! The weather never fails on Mother’s Day – perhaps there’s a reason for that, yes? (Happy belated Mother’s Day, Mom!!)
Even though I had a ton of schoolwork to do, I did manage to get out and enjoy the sunshine, largely in the form of running.
14 miles in Central and Riverside Park on Saturday, followed by an easy 5.5 miles on Sunday. When the weather cooperates, it’s pretty hard not to have a great run.
But despite the weather, the legs have been a little heavy so the main goal for this week’s long run was to keep a fairly easy, steady pace. When I got home, I took my first ice bath since NYC Marathon training last year. I almost forgot how torturous they are, but luckily remembered what gets me through them and takes my mind off of my freezing limbs:
- Towel over the shoulders for warmth
- iPhone for email/Facebook/Twitter checking
- Glass of water for hydration
- Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter by the spoonful (hey, whatever works...)
After the ice bath, I felt immediate relief in the legs. The ice helps constrict blood vessels, reduce swelling and tissue breakdown and helps muscles recover after a long or particularly tough run. I usually take ice baths after runs longer than 12-13 miles, and always notice less soreness the day after. Even though they’re not the most fun, they’ll be a key component to my build up to and during NYC Marathon training this year (and hopefully will help keep me injury-free!)
Along with studying, I made refueling a priority throughout the day – strawberries with Greek yogurt and more Dark Chocolate dreams peanut butter
Kind of a hot mess, but a delicious one.
I always like to have a little treat on long run days, and Saturday’s was a large piece of carrot cake from Whole Foods
Here’s how the week looked in running:
- Monday: XT (elliptical) and PT appointment
- Tuesday: 7.5 miles easy
- Wednesday: 7.25 miles with 4 @ tempo pace
- Thursday: XT (spin bike/elliptical combo), lifting and PT
- Friday: 6.5 miles easy
- Saturday: 14 miles
- Sunday: 5.65 miles easy, lifting and PT
Total: 40.85 miles. My first 40 mile week since January and I’m feelin’ good 🙂
Coming up on the blog – why I love avocados oh so much.
Question: Do you take ice baths (and if so, when)? Favorite sweet treat? I heart me some carrot cake!
