Thanksgiving weekend was so fun and relaxing – I’m kind of in denial it’s over and we are back to the grind. Since I’ve got an insane month ahead of me (biochem paper and final exam, research methods HUGE paper and final exam, the usual crazy work stuff), I’m going to rewind to Saturday/Sunday fun with sister.
Because anything that involves cupcakes deserves its own post, right?
The best cupcakes in the city, if you ask me, from none other than Magnolia Bakery.
But before our visit to this NYC institution, sister and I needed some lunch at our favorite – the Whole Foods salad bar
And a visit to the Union Square Holiday Market
Now, I know Magnolia Bakery is totally touristy, but I still think nothing compares to one of their freshly iced cupcakes. And anyways, we were still in pretend-tourist mode.
The line was fairly short, and we waited about 10 minutes before scoring our loot
And heading over to the park across the street to chow down
I actually think this park was built for people who just could not wait to eat their cupcakes. I chose vanilla/vanilla (pink frosting, obviously)
Nom nom nom. Sister had a red velvet
This is one of my favorite street corners in NYC because it also houses the Marc by Marc Jacobs store and a new bookstore, also from Marc Jacobs (it used to be an adorable bookstore, which I kinda miss even though I heart me some MJ).
So sister and I “died” for everything in the MJ store and walked up Bleeker to Washington Square Park.
It was freakin’ freezing, so we headed home for more leftovers from our Thanksgiving feast and saw the movie “Love and Other Drugs” with Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal, which was really cute (although I do have a soft spot for cheesy romantic comedies and Jake G.).
Although I’m sad it’s over, this weekend was exactly what I needed before kicking it into high gear and finishing the semester as best as I can.
Running news: After a minor setback on Saturday morning from running too much, too soon (i.e., the story of my life), I’m back on track and the IT band is feelin’ good.
- Sunday: 40 minutes spinning, 36 minutes elliptical, lifting, core work, PT and stretching; PM – 90 minute Bikram yoga class
- Monday: 3.5 miles on the treadmill, 30 minutes elliptical, core work, PT (no pain, hooray!)
- Tuesday: 34 minutes spinning, 26 minutes elliptical, lifting, core work and PT
Question: Salty or sweet? I’ll take sweet any day (especially cupcakes!)
I’m definitely a salt girl. But I wouldn’t turn down one of those cupcakes. 🙂
Glad the ITB is feeling better!
Sweet. To the point that I had to start seriously cutting back on my consumption. It was bad news bears, and I was like, Sarah, who ARE you? That said, I’ve only had “designer” cupcakes twice, and have been pretty underwhelmed both times. Maybe I need to try some more?
i’ll have to disagree – wait til you try butter lane cupcakes in the east village and you’ll say goodbye to magnolia forever. for real. their cupcakes are so much better!
how about salt, followed by sweet? i like both, in that order. no compromises!
take it easy on that IT band!
SWEET all the way! I have always wanted a Magnolia cupcake, that icing looks amazing…
SWEET! i can never get sick of sweet stuff! healthy sweet stuff though 🙂
you have some hard core workouts.. you go girl!
Mmmm cupcakes! Though I found I love Buttercup Bakery (Midtown East & UWS) better– Magnolia’s frosting is too sickly sweet for my palate.
How are you liking Bikram yoga? I am thinking of buying the $30 deal and starting in January, but unsure if I’ll like it! Is it getting easier? Do you feel drained after sweating that much? I want to supplement it to my running but afraid it’ll drain all my energy 🙂
Ah! I like Buttercup, but I think the cake is always too dry. I’m actually liking Bikram! The first class was awful (apparently that’s pretty common), but after that they got much better. I don’t think it’s too draining actually – I feel pretty good after the classes! You should try – the $30 for 30 is a great deal, at least 🙂
HA, I’ve eaten cupcakes in that park! Looks like such a fun day. I really want to see Love and Other Drugs, too! Might end up waiting for Netflix, though, since I always get to the movie theater a little too late.
I am so so glad your IT band is feeling better. SWEET-100%. I love Magnolia Bakery….mmmh!! Your pictures are gorgeous.
Thanks for the sweet comments…I will definitely be filling you in on tips that I learn!
while i do enjoy the sweet stuff SALT is my vice. i put salt on everything. and those margaritas? i may have been tempted to swipe the salt off the rip and lick it off of my fingers hahah
I’m definitely a sweet girl. I’d have been right there with you for those cupcakes! Glad your IT band is feeling better too!
Thanks for sharing your birthday! Bummer about your best friend moving. I LOVE watching the news in the morning too!
I once did a cupcake walk (went to about 5 different bakeries in one day) and I can say with no hesitation that the best cupcake in NYC comes from Sugar Sweet Sunshine on Rivington. Give it a shot! I also sat in that park to eat my Magnolia cupcake as well. Goodluck on your busy week and yay to getting rid of the IT band pain. (Knock on wood)
Most definitely salty! But I agree with you that Magnolia is the best! Their red velvet rocks my socks off
I’m a cheese girl, but I love me some cupcakes!!!
I really loved that movie (Love and Other Drugs), but it was definitely different than what I expected. (thought it’d be funnier?)
I’m a total sweets girl. Rarely can I turn them down…
