Your comments to my last post were awesome, thanks guys! I will try my best to keep posts like that coming (school is starting to kick my ass already, so you’ll have to bear with me).
Some of you expressed interest in seeing my daily diet, kind of as “A Day in the Life of a Runner.”
I’m sad to say I still have yet to run since the Achilles incident (it’s been about 1.5 weeks and I AM GOING INSANE). The good news is that it’s been feeling progressively better, but I’m still not sure as to when I’ll be free and clear to run. So I’m still cross training like a fool because it doesn’t cause any pain.
I don’t usually post everything I eat because that’s not really my focus on the blog (uh, and I’m forgetful with the camera…), but here are Wednesday’s eats, mashed in with a little daily recap.
- 5:22 a.m. My alarm beeps. LOUDLY. I bound out of bed like a gazelle.
- 5:30 a.m. I grab a banana and water bottle and leave my apartment for the gym. Almost slip and fall no less than seven times in four blocks (ice storm, remember)
- 5:40 a.m. Begin my workout – 36 minutes on the spin bike, 24 minutes on the elliptical (I’m into even numbers, y’all), core work, stretching and some PT
- 7:10 a.m. Risk death walking back through ice to apartment
- 7:30 a.m. Breakfast: Barbara’s Shredded Spoonfuls and Oats, cinnamon, mixed berries, almond milk (I don’t measure portions, I just fill the bowl. It’s very scientific)
- 7:45 a.m. Decaf coffee and quick e-mail checking before I leave for work
- 9:25 a.m. Arrive at work late because of gnarly ice storm and because the 6 train IS THE BANE OF MY EXISTENCE.
- 9:30 a.m. Work ensues
- 12:00 p.m. Lunch occurs. I don’t snack between breakfast and lunch because I’m usually pretty busy, and strangely not hungry. The second the clock hits noon I am ravenous. About one-half a large container of Fage 2% Greek yogurt, sprinkle of cinnamon, one whole sliced pear, handful of walnuts, three dried figs and a Dove dark chocolate (very important)
- 12:30 p.m. Sometimes I go to Trader Joe’s for groceries, but this time I had to hoof it down to NYU to pick up a reading packet for one of my classes
- 1:15 p.m. I was a speed demon and made it back in a flash (i.e., instead of walking I took the subway)
- 3:30 p.m. Afternoon snackage – carrots and celery with natural peanut butter
- 6:00 p.m. Confession: I am a grandma (if you didn’t know this already). I usually eat dinner at work or in class, any time between 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. Today I was hungry quite early, but I went with it. Quinoa (probably about 1/3 cup), grilled cauliflower, crimini mushrooms, bell peppers, zucchini, broccoli, sweet potato, chicken and goat cheese with some romaine lettuce
I usually eat this cold, but it can also be reheated. Since I don’t normally eat dinner at home during the week, I madk a giant batch of something on Sundays and package it up for the week. It’s kind of a pain, but not having to think about dinner during the week is worth it!
- 8:00 p.m. Evening snackage – I always have a snack after dinner, usually consisting of Fage 2% Greek yogurt mixed with Dark Chocolate Dreams PB and a few handfuls of Barbara’s Peanut Butter Puffins
I didn’t have school on this particular night, so I spent some time on class readings, blogging and catching up on life’s happenings.
- X:00 p.m. I’m not telling you what time I went to bed. You’ll make fun
You may be wondering how many calories I consumed, but to be honest I don’t really count calories (unless my pants are feelin’ tight or I want to make sure I’m getting enough during hard training).
I’m a firm believer in listening to your body when it’s hungry and when it’s not, and eating whole, delicious unprocessed foods as much as possible.
Living in New York, the land of takeout and $12 salads for lunch, I’m kind of in the minority when it comes to what I eat in that I rarely buy prepared meals or takeout. By making most of my own meals, I know exactly what’s in them and feel much better not having processed crap or unknown ingredients in my body. It’s also a lot cheaper!
I’m not completely crazy though – I love exploring NYC restaurants as much as the next foodie!
Question: Are you a takeout person? Do you brown bag it a lot?
i never really takeoutfood!! i like making my own!.. great eats.. but your lunch is like a snack to me! ahah..
i eat dinner early too! and go to bed early as well.. dont worry your not alone!
I never measure my cereal either – not my style. Haha, I wake up at 5-something everyday too so I share the grandma lifestyle 😉 Exercising in the morning is my favorite thing…the best time for me by far. I would totally eat dinner right at 6 everyday too if I didn’t have what I call 2nd lunch to hold me over. Thanks for sharing your day, I always find it interesting to see people’s routines!
so sorry to hear about the ongoing saga of your achilles. I really hope it gets better soon, I know you must be going bonkers. (have you ever listened to Zeppelin’s ‘Achilles Last Stand’?)
Very interesting food as well! I love Fage yogurt also, the kind with the honey.
I am not a brown bag lunch guy. I have tried it, but he excitement of being sporadic at lunch and exploring options gets me every time. I do eat very healthy for lunch though and try and listen to my body based on the training I did for the morning or the night before.
PS- it’s okay to go to bed early when you wake up at 5:22AM and kick ass all day.
I go to bed at X:00 time too!!! Definite brown bagger. I want that achilles of yours to get better soon!
Do you ever make eggs as part of your breakfast/post-workout meal?
hmm, I rarely eat eggs. I like them, just never buy them or have time to make them in the mornings, usually!
I pretty much brown bag it all the time. Because I’m sort of cheap (or thrifty- it sounds nicer).
Eww… I bet the trains really are awful right now. Friends around here are complaining, too. Either because they hate the train and were forced to take it, or because they always take it and hate the masses trying to squeeze on!
I brown bag a ton, I like saving money and making my own meals 😉 And um, I wish I went to bed at X:00, I’m always tired because I’m more of a night person. That came in handy in college, but NOT ANYMORE!
Love this! Such a fun idea for a post, I really love hearing how other people balance crazy lives/busy schedules and workouts!
XOXO
S
I go to bed so early compared to normal college students, but I need my sleep for early morning classes and working out!
That’s so funny you do even numbers – I have a weird thing that I like multiples of 5. I always do like 30 or 35 min on a machine or have to have the volume on the TV on 5s. I don’t know why?
I’m not very disciplined so I often end up going out to eat because I realize I have no food. Or there are days like today where I packed food AND put it aside in the frig…then forgot to take it to work. Whoops.
Oh, and I love puffins.
I don’t brown bag just bc i never go out to eat. Whenever I do it’s pretty much a rare occasion. I do count calories just bc it works for me and if i don’t i get really anal and would prob under eat too much. Sorry to hear about your achilles 😦 Hope you get better.
I used to be pretty bad about going out to lunch on workdays. But I’ve been really good the past couple months – saves me $ and a bunch of extra calories!
Hope your achilles heals soon so you can run again!
Thanks for sharing!! You are a busy girl! Isn’t Fage the best?!! I do have to mix “something” into though.
I hav a post idea for you: Show your readers your different creations using Fage?
Well at least you’ll never get a stress fracture with all that calcium! (Knock on wood)
I rarely buy meals out unless it is an “out to dinner with friends” kind of event. Definitely a brown-bagger.
I’m a total brown bagger. We are very similar… I either eat leftovers for lunch everyday OR I make a big batch of something and have it for lunch like this week I did tortilla soup. I do wish I could get on the greek yogurt kick but its just not my thing… I did finally find ezekial bread thanks to you!! Also, I go to bed at like 9 every night! hahah
Also, are you coming to Boston for the marathon? I’m planning something if you are!
Most likely I’ll be there – so get planning! 🙂
BAD Achilles! It’s great that you’re still getting in killer workouts despite that though! 🙂
I’m the same as you! I rarely buy take-out foods because they are SO expensive, and good vegan foods are hard to come by where I live anyway! 😛
Love this post! Seeing your day is so interesting!!
I brown bag it all the time, mostly because I eat out all the time when I’m not at home and I travel so much for work! Don’t worry, I always eat meals on the early bird special side of things…
I almost always bring my lunch and breakfast with me to work..and make my dinner! Exceptions being Friday lunches and weekend dinners..I tend to go out for those. I feel like my eating consistently throughout the week evens out my weekend unhealthy bar foods
I used to be really good about bringing breakfasts and lunches to work and then…something happened….I got lazy. Your post has inspired me to bring back the brown bag! I love, love, love DCD 🙂 Good choices all around!
i am in the same boat. i was a hardcore brown-bagger for YEARS, but this past month or two that’s gone out the window. hello, $12 salads. as soon as i see this month’s credit card bill, i will surely change my habits. or we can hope…
i can’t believe you pack lunch AND dinner every day! i have to work till 11 twice this week, and packing an extra meal has been the bane of my existence.
i’m like you though, in that i never get takeout at work. i would rather spend my money in other places (hello excessive restaurants) so it’s worth the effort for me to bring my own meals. it’s also one of my opportunities to eat the produce i buy from the farmers market each week, and the stuff they have at the local salad bar just doesn’t compare in seasonality and freshness (and flavor!).
i think we ought to break up this routine of yours a little to distract from the not-running. dining plans soon?
dining plans soon, yes!! let’s discuss..
I do weird time on machines too, so I can reach an hour- and I can never stop at an odd number either 🙂
My lunchbag is usually busting at the seams with everything I put in it! I’m glad I’m not the only one who packs regularly. Most of my co-workers think it’s weird.
I think it’s great that you take your own lunch/dinner! That way you don’t have to wonder about what you are eating all of the time! I always take my lunch to work also! Makes life much easier most days!
I am so, so sorry your stupidface Achilles is continuing to be a bitch. Maybe it’s doctor time? Do you have any idea what aggravated it? That sucks.
Re: lunch – I’ve brownbagged almost every day in my professional life. If I forget to bring a lunch, I’m more apt to skip lunch than buy one. That’s what stupid-frugal looks like: hungry.
oh no – stupid frugal is no good!
Thanks 🙂 I went to the doc and the verdict is a little tendonitis, which is very stubborn. I think too much after the Manhattan half on older shoes did me in. I’ll probably start PT soon. boo.
Good for you for making your own lunches. I always pack my lunch. It’s cheaper and like you said, I know exactly what’s in them. My husband and I usually just eat out about once a week.
I always bring my own…and I eat dinner at like 6 every night too! Guess I’m a grandma???? ha.
I tried to get up early and workout before work but never could get myself out of bed much less motivated! Have you always been a morning person or did you train your body to expect exercise in the morning? I truly believe you can train your body to do stuff, like I used to never eat breakfast, I was just never hungry in the morning. Now I won’t do anything until I have had a great b-fast! I always brown bag. Like you said, it’s healthier and cheaper plus, you can control the portion sizes, which seem to be getting bigger and bigger everyday!
I’m not really a take out person. If I’m going to eat out I want to pick a restaurant and sit down and enjoy my meal=) I do eat Subway, Chipotle, and Panera on occasion. That kind of thing only happens when the boyfriend is added in the mix and messes with my ‘normal’ eating habits.
The cereal looks so yummy! 🙂 I’m a brown-bagger but often at night I’m eating out–most of the time it’s something like soup though! haha
